Birthday Week

Weekly Happenings: This past week was a week of birthday celebrations. My birthday was on Monday and Joseph’s was on Wednesday. I did a previous post about Joseph’s birthday party already. It was sort of hard explaining to Joseph on Wednesday that it was his birthday but that he wasn’t having a party (since we had his party early). He was really confused. When I got him up that morning, I sang “Happy Birthday” to him and said it was his birthday. He got really excited and said, “Really?! Have party?” I told him we had already had his party. He didn’t get upset or anything, he was just confused. We ended up having friends over to play to kind of make up for it. Joseph had his annual check-up as well. Luckily only one shot to have to deal with (flu shot). Since Paul did all his yard work before the party, we were free to have a fun day yesterday. We went to the farmers’ market in Old Town Helotes, went to the zoo for a couple of hours (added Joseph to our pass since he’s now three), had lunch at a place called Chris Madrid’s (seriously good burgers), and then headed home to relax before having homemade pizza for dinner.

Weekly Weather: We’ve had a few good-sized rainstorms come through, which has been quite a blessing. It has increased the humidity levels, but I’ll take it if it means more rain!

What Paul’s Been Up To: He’s looking forward to his classes with the Pathway Program starting up in a couple of weeks. Other than that, it’s kind of the same deal with him, yard work (I never realized how much work it takes to maintain a couple of yards…I’m so grateful he is such a hard worker), working with his scout, and working at the library. 🙂

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Teaching piano, keeping Joseph happy and healthy, and trying to keep up with my church callings. Oh, and still trying to keep up with my work-out program. The other day, Joseph was watching me working on the elliptical. As soon as I stopped, he asked if I was done. I said that I was and then laid down to do some crunches. He asked if I was sleeping. When I told him no and started to do the crunches, he laid down next to me and tried to do his own, complete with sound effects. Pretty funny!

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He had a blast at his birthday party. He also loved it when he got to have friends over during the week. This introvert momma needs to plan more play dates! He has also been working hard at growing. His three-year stats are as follows: 34.2 pounds and 37.5 inches tall…and I think that his soft spot FINALLY closed. Man, that took forever!

Bonus Blog Post: Joseph’s Birthday Party

Joseph’s birthday isn’t until Wednesday, but we decided that since today was a holiday, it would be good to celebrate it today. We invited several of his friends over to play outside, have hot dogs and chips for lunch, and then go inside to play, followed by cake and presents. We also put together little goody bags for his friends (Paul came up with the idea of making it a “car emergency kit” that had a juice box, a fruit snack, a pair of sunglasses, some stickers, and a little matchbox car…brilliant).

After they played outside for a while (and got all sandy, hot, and sweaty), we let them play inside for a bit. Cars were definitely popular with this group!

Making beautiful music.

Joseph had so much fun with all his friends. 🙂

In this house, we do homemade cakes…so here is my version of a car cake. Paul came up with the idea to do the roads and put the cars on top…that way Joseph got some bonus cars, which he now calls his “cake cars” (with the exception of the Lightning McQueen one…that one is definitely Lightning McQueen). 🙂

August is Almost Over

Weekly Happenings: It’s hard to believe that August is almost over. I’m looking forward to it, not just because we have the “fun” part of the year approaching (birthdays and holidays), but because fall temperatures are now on the horizon. Luckily the mornings have been a bit cooler so we were able to get out of the house to play a bit. I have forgotten how much Joseph loves the park. I need to be better about getting him out there to play. We also had a fun visit with our nephew, Shawn, who was in town for business. He was pretty busy, for obvious reasons, but we did get to have him come for dinner one night. 🙂

The Weekly Weather: It’s been slightly cooler this past week, especially in the mornings. We’re at about the mod-70s in the mornings and then mid- to upper-90s in the afternoons.

What Paul’s Been Up To: Work has been good for him, and he spent quite a bit of time this past weekend getting the yard looking extra good since we’re having a birthday party for Joseph tomorrow (nothing too crazy, just some of his little friends coming over to play outside and have lunch, with cake and presents to wrap it all up).

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Mostly getting ready to have all my students starting back up now that school has started again. Also, getting stuff ready for the ward choir to sing, making sure all the visiting teaching slips have been passed out, and getting birthday stuff finalized. I also got my first (and unfortunately, probably not my last) fire ant bite. That little punk of a bug bit me while I was pushing Joseph on the swings at the park. It bit and then curled around the bite so that I couldn’t just shake it off, I had to pick it off. The bite started swelling up quite a bit, but one of my friends gave me an alcohol wipe, which helped a lot. A few days later it was still bothering me, so Paul got out some cream that he got from some sort of Army training. It helped a lot.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: Perfecting his imaginative play. He was playing with two of my little stuffed bears. One of them was laying flat on the floor and he took the other one and walked it up to the one lying down and then said, “Get up, Captain Kirk!” It made me laugh quite a bit. Yes, he’s seen quite a bit of the original Star Trek, lol. He’s also much more into the idea of his birthday. He keeps talking about his birthday bike. Oh, and Jason sent him some play tools for his birthday, which he thought were awesome. He kept saying, “It’s for my birthday!” Finally, he has just recently started wanting to make sure that everyone we interact with knows what his name is and also knows that Paul and I are his mommy and daddy. It’s pretty cute.

He also loved shaking the pods from the pepper tree to hear them rattling.

He kept saying it sounded like a rattle snake (which he’s only heard on TV).

I love this little man!
