Spring Break Fun

Weekly Happenings: This past week was spring break for Joseph. I was grateful it was this week because it made it easier to make the transition due to Daylight Savings Time starting back up and having to change times. Paul also took the week off work, so we spent the week catching up on projects around the house (and adding new ones, haha) and doing some fun daytime activities. We went to the new IKEA that recently opened not too far from us (hence the “adding new projects” since we always walk out of there with at least one thing for Paul to put together). We also went up to Austin one day. It’s been a lot of fun family time, but I think we’ll all be ready for a little bit of structure again.

The Weekly Weather: It’s been a mix of warm and cool, but no real cold, which is nice.

What Paul’s Been Up To: He was able to get done a lot of stuff on his to-do list and also spend a lot of time with the family which we all loved. One funny story: with the warmer temperatures starting back up, bugs have also starting reemerging, with what seems like an abundance of crane flies. Joseph HATES crane flies. One of them got into our stairwell and was REALLY high up on the wall (our stairwell is open to the second story of our house). Paul got it into his head that he was going to use Joseph’s rubber band gun to shoot the thing. After a couple shots at it, he got it enough to stun it, which made it come down low enough for him to run for the fly swatter to get it. I was rather impressed with the entire process.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: I had a bit of back-and-forth with my schedule this week. I still had students (nobody opted to take the week off), so on those days we didn’t do too much out of the house. On the days that I didn’t have students, we did our fun outing stuff.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He’s been soaking in the “go to bed late, sleep in the next morning” aspect of spring break and says he’s looking forward to summer vacation, haha. That kid takes after me in that he struggles to wake up in the morning if it’s before a certain time. He also immensely enjoyed stopping off at Buc-ee’s (think gas station on steroids) both on the way out to and the way back from Austin.

What Abigail’s Been Up To: She has been a ball of energy (and sometimes fury) this past week. We rode the mini train at Zilker Park in Austin (it’s a park similar to Brakenridge Park that’s over by the San Antonio Zoo…so, a huge amount of acreage with walking/jogging/biking trails, big, open grassy areas with picnic tables, a playground for the kids, etc.) and it was a full-time job just keeping her on the train. She doesn’t like to be contained unless it’s her idea. She also was excited to go to Buc-ee’s, since (for some crazy reason), she really likes the mascot (a beaver). Two-year-olds are an interesting lot.

This Week in Pictures:

We were watching the original Superman movie and she was completely mesmerized by the music at the beginning.
Walking in Daddy’s flip-flops.
She had gotten them on and I was rather surprised with how well she maneuvered around in them.
The main reason we went to IKEA: a new media cabinet for our living room.
An unplanned purchase from IKEA. Abigail loved playing with the other kitchen we had gotten from a friend, but she was HARD on it. With it being a bit lightweight, I was afraid she’d end up getting hurt by pulling it over on herself or something similar. We stumbled upon this one which is quite a bit more heavy-duty and as a bonus can be anchored to the wall. 🙂 She absolutely loves it and I love that it has storage for her pots, pans, and play food.
I got my sign and baskets up!
Posing by the giant Buc-ee’s statue outside the gas station.
The kids each got a small Buc-ee keychain.
Walking in Zilker Park.
Posing on the old fire engine that’s incorporated into the play structure at the park.
Family selfie on the train!
Stopping at Buc-ee’s on the way back (notice the keychain still firmly in Abigail’s grasp…that thing has been her constant companion…in fact, today as I was putting her in for a nap, she insisted that it be tucked in next to her).
Abigail was trying to hold his hand while Joseph was being a goof.
Abigail kept giving him a hug, haha.
I seriously think this was the highlight of the entire trip for her!
Paul was able to find a good spot for Abigail’s sign in her room and get it hung up.
They look a bit sad right now because there’s a cold breeze blowing today, but when we were at Lowe’s this morning, we stumbled upon purple shamrocks! I had no idea they existed in a color other than green! These will be fun to see grow. Paul also transplanted my miniature rose (the one he got me for Valentine’s Day) into a larger pot. Oh, and we picked up some tomato and strawberry plants as well. I’m glad that spring is right around the corner!
I never tire of sights like this!

C’mon Spring!

Weekly Happenings: This past week was pretty average. We didn’t do much at the beginning of the week because the weather was miserable. Luckily it warmed up as the week progressed. To usher in spring break (which officially started today), we popped over to the zoo this morning. It was a bit crowded, but we got to see all our favorites (including the new rhino enclosure that just was completed last week).

The Weekly Weather: As I mentioned, the beginning of the week was a bit rough. Overnight lows below freezing, daily highs not much warmer especially since it was a humid cold). I was grateful to have it warm up a few days later.

What Paul’s Been Up To: Mainly his normal stuff. He went to see the newest Marvel movie (Captain Marvel) with friends last night. He’s looking forward to a bit of relaxing (and time to get some projects completed) since he’ll be taking this next week off.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Pretty much normal stuff for me. More of my students started this week (I’m up to eleven, but some are waiting until after spring break to start). It’s nice to ease into it before hitting my full load.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He had a fun time at his school field day (they did both indoor and outdoor activities). He also has been a huge help watching Abigail while I teach piano.

What Abigail’s Been Up To: She continues to strive for independence which sometimes means tantrums when things don’t work out the way she wants them to. It’s a challenge to be sure, but she is so sweet the rest of the time that there is some respite. She’s also starting to string more words together to form simple sentences. For example, last night she said, “Go sit couch?” when she wanted me to sit on the couch with her to watch a show. One funny thing she’s started doing is when I put her in her room for either a nap or to go to bed, she’ll lay back on her bed and start “snoring”. It’d been entertaining watching her continue to grow and learn.

This Week in Pictures:

I was glad to have the rest of the week warm up because…
…the beginning of the week was miserable.
I walked in on Monday morning to see this.
I’m still trying to figure out how she stayed asleep like that…because she was solid asleep.
One fun thing I did was get a few more fun decorations for my kitchen.
Can you spot the jaguar? His camouflage is really good!
Checking out the rhinos (our zoo now has two instead of one) from the overlook that’s part of the new rhino area. It’s really nice!

All Sorts of Fun

Weekly Happenings: It was a week full of fun dress-up days for Joseph, fun projects for me and Paul, and fun new-to-her toys for Abigail. I’ll explain more as we go. 🙂

The Weekly Weather: It’s been all over the place. We had one day that got into the 80s (most days have been in the 60s-70s), but it’s supposed to drop drastically tomorrow night when a cold front moves in and we’ll only hit the mid-40s. Guess I need to pull my plants in at least one more time (since our lows are supposed to be below freezing).

What Paul’s Been Up To: Every once in a while, Paul will have meetings at our house (either related to church or to our HOA) and he’s thought for a while that it would be neat to have a TV in the dining room that he can connect his computer to, essentially creating a large projector of sorts. Well, this past week, he made it happen. He’s even framing it out so that it looks all pretty. 🙂

What Sarah’s Been Up To: I’ve done some organizing, some donating of unused items, re-homed Abigail’s crib, and the like. I also attended my monthly book club meeting. I seriously look forward to this night all month. It’s so nice seeing my friends and having an intelligent conversation about the book we read is rather refreshing after a day full of cartoons, toys, and the occasional tantrum. Oh, and I started up teaching piano. I had one student start this past week and more start next week. I have a total of eight signed up so far.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He had dress-up days all this past week to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. I didn’t get a single picture, except one that a friend got of him dressed up as his favorite book character during a parade (which I missed since it was during nap time)…oh well! He was also a huge help watching Abigail during my piano time. There are times when I dislike the gap between them (mainly because I often feel like I sort of “started over” because they are so far apart), but other times it’s great (like when he can watch her).

What Abigail’s Been Up To: She’s getting used to her big girl bed and the freedom that comes with it. She’s also been throwing more tantrums…I try my hardest to put myself in her shoes. How frustrating it must be to want something (or not want something) and not know how to express it? To feel a sense of independence but find that you’re not completely free to do as you choose 24/7? This too shall pass, small one. Momma loves you!

This Week in Pictures:

With an open bed, sometimes we find her like this.
We got this play kitchen from a friend. Abigail has been over the moon!
We also got this ride-on toy. It’s a Minnie Mouse plane and Abigail loves riding it and also pushing it around (not to mention hiding stuff in the seat, which lifts up).
I got a new sign for my kitchen. I think it matches the other decor I have in there a bit better than what I had there before (a kind of European-style sign that had the word EAT spelled out with fancy-looking utensils). I knew I wanted something to match the style of the old Coke sign I had there and this new sign fits perfectly. I also love the mix of wood and metal.
With March already here, it was time to decorate for St. Patrick’s Day!
Both kids really like this little guy.
I love Irish blessings!
This is probably my favorite holiday door-hanger that I have. I love the mix of metal, wood, and burlap.
A new month means a new quote!
At least I had a moment to put my feet up while she played, right?
Pretending to give Joseph a drink.
At his storybook character parade.
Part of framing out the TV is needing to Abigail-proof the cord…
Another part is to make an opening in the side so that the different outlets for cables are accessible.
It’s almost done…
Paul framed out the front this afternoon.
A side view of the frame. Now all it needs is paint and stain.
