Crazy Storms, Camp Outs, and a Sickie

Weekly Happenings: Not too much out of the ordinary happened this past week. We had story time, play dates, grocery shopping, etc.. Paul had work and scouts (I believe he starts his next semester this week). On Friday night, Paul went to an Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills overnight camp out, where he and other Scout leaders learned more about the different skills to teach the boys on camp outs. Joseph and I fended pretty well for ourselves except for the fact that yesterday morning he woke up with a high fever, saying that his throat hurt. Since strep has been going around, I went ahead and took him in to urgent care. Sure enough, he’s got it. So, we’ve got some antibiotics for him and he’s well on the road to recovery.

The Weekly Weather: We had a major storm come through on Tuesday night that dropped baseball-softball sized hail. Yup, you read that correctly. Luckily, it seems like our house is okay (though we still need to take a look at the roof to make sure we didn’t miss anything). Some of my friends have major damage to their homes and there are a lot of cars with hail damage (luckily ours were both in the garage). Some businesses in Helotes (the town near us) sustained major damage when the hail came crashing through their skylights, making it rain not just water, but glass as well, onto unsuspecting shoppers. The rest of the week after that was sunny with a few storms here and there. We’re supposed to get thunderstorms all this next week, so it’ll be interesting to see what transpires. That’s spring in South Texas!

What Paul’s Been Up To: As mentioned before, not too much out of the ordinary. Work, scouts, and getting ready for another semester of school.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not too much on my front, either. I did play my flute in church today. It was an arrangement of “Be Still My Soul” that was written for piano and two violins (which is easy to have flutes play, as long as the notes don’t go too low, and if they do, it’s easy to switch out for a different note). It was me, a friend of mine playing the second flute/violin part, and our dear, trusted accompanist (also a dear friend). It turned out beautiful!

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He has been his normal, crazy self, for the most part. He slowed down a bit yesterday, when he was feeling sick, but now that the antibiotics are kicking in, he’s feeling quite a bit better. He did rather well at the doctor’s yesterday. He willingly opened his mouth for the rapid strep test (which, I think, is a first for him…usually the nurse has to practically pry his mouth open). While waiting for the doctor, the nurse gave him this special paper and a plastic “pen” kind of shaped like a small butter knife that made marks on the special paper. That kept him occupied the entire time we were waiting for the doctor, and he got to keep it, which made it even better. He also got to pick a toy from the treasure chest at the end (he chose a green jump rope). I appreciate the fact that this urgent care recognizes the fact that kids might be nervous about being at a doctor that is different than their regular one and does their best to put them at ease. I’m also grateful that there are stand alone urgent cares (as opposed to only be attached to large hospitals). Because we have quite a few in our area, they are rarely crowded. It’s not something that I experienced in CA. One funny story about Joseph: earlier last week I was getting ready to help him brush his teeth and he was kind of dancing/wiggling around on his steps in front of the sink. Consequently, his nose ran into the toothbrush I was holding, leaving a bit of bright blue toothpaste on the tip of his nose. I said, “Oops! You’ve got a blue nose!” He answered back, laughing, “Yeah! Like ‘BLUEdolph!'” I burst out laughing, which made him laugh harder. What four-year-old can whip out a different version of a popular name to suit the situation? Joseph can, that’s for sure!

Joseph created Bowser’s castle (from Mario Brothers) out of his Mega Blocks.

The T-Rex was clearly Bowser. The Easter egg is a Yoshi egg. I love his imagination!

This is a hailstone that Paul went out and grabbed from our yard…half an hour after the storm was over…so imagine how big it was when it first fell! They were crazily shaped, too. Not spherical at all. They were all pokey and jagged.

Paul put up Joseph’s bird feeder and filled it up (as well as our other bird feeder). We’ve had so many birds in our yard!
IMG_20160412_145039
We have mostly smaller birds, but we do have a few different varieties of doves that also frequent the feeders.

Paul’s set up for his overnighter…that little one-man tent is rather handy.

They were camping in a field near the Scout offices, so there are still homes nearby. He spotted this deer.

It was just hanging out by somebody’s house. It reminds me that while this part of San Antonio is by no means “country”, it is a bit more rural than the heart of the city, for sure.

The projected forecast for this next week. Wee…fun! Hopefully it’s just thunderstorms and no more hail of Biblical proportions (oh, and tornadoes…please, no tornadoes)!

Blessings From On High

Weekly Happenings: Not too much happened during the first part of last week that was out of the ordinary. Park play dates, hanging out at home, work, piano teaching, etc. Towards the end of last week (I think it was Wednesday), one of my friends called, asking if we could watch her kids while she took her husband into the ER (he was having severe stomach/abdominal pain). I immediately agreed to watch the girls (their oldest is close to Joseph in age and they are play mates). The play date quickly turned into a sleep over when it became apparent that our friends were not going to be done at the ER any time soon (it was determined that kidney stones were the culprits). We just set up a sleeping bag for the oldest girl on the floor in Joseph’s room (a perk of them still being four) and put the baby in Joseph’s crib which is still set up in our room (I guess it’s good we still had it put together). My friend came and got them in the morning. There have been a few times when friends have come to our rescue watching Joseph either overnight or for long stretches when we have needed to handle medical emergencies, so I was grateful to be able to keep paying it forward and help our friends in a pinch. Friday morning ushered in another crazy experience. I got a text from Paul a little after 9:00 saying that if I heard anything, to know that he was okay. He was on lock down because there was a shooter on base (nowhere near his office, but the entire base was locked down while they were making sure it was all clear). Apparently an airman got onto base with a gun, shot his commander over a dispute of some sort, and then took his own life. While I am very, very grateful that Paul is okay, my heart is so sad because of the loss of life. I’ve been praying for the families of those affected, that they may eventually find peace. After that craziness, yesterday seemed low-key. I went to a stake music training, the boys went to Lowe’s for some stuff for the house, and then we had friends over last night to play games. I thought today would be relatively normal, but we found out that due to immense growth in our area, they are moving a ward that has been meeting at our former stake center (when they created a new stake, our stake center fell in the boundaries of the new stake, so we are currently without a dedicated stake center) into our building and moving our ward into another building. So, in two weeks, we’ll be meeting at a new building and at a different time (1:00 instead of 11:00). Also, our mutual night (the night that the youth meet for activities) is going to change to Thursdays. This will mean that all of the buildings in our stake will be at capacity for wards meeting in them, which means they will hopefully be able to start building another building on some land that the Church has already purchased (most likely a new stake center for our stake). Whew!

The Weekly Weather: It’s been just gorgeous. Cool, breezy, an occasional rain storm…spring at its finest. My only minor complaint is that the pollen counts have been a little out of control (there was one day where I took Joseph to the park and then noticed, as I was putting him into the car to go back home, that the car was literally coated in pollen), but medicine has been able to keep that under control, for the most part. 🙂

What Paul’s Been Up To: He’s been on a mini spring break for school (his next set of classes is due to start next week), and has done some stuff around the house (as is the norm). He also found out that even though he is currently working in the IT department, he is being awarded Library Technician of the Year (for his work last year, before he transferred departments). He will get to go to Washington D.C. to accept the award and also gets to tour of the Library of Congress. It will be a short trip (two days or so), so probably not a whole lot of other sightseeing will happen, though he is going to see what he might be able to squeeze in.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not too much out of the ordinary on my front. I did get released as the visiting teaching coordinator and supervisor (which I’ve been doing for about two years) and (because there’s no rest for the weary, haha) have been called as compassionate service coordinator. Basically I will be helping make sure the physical needs of the sisters in our ward are being taken care of. This usually includes organizing bringing in meals for those who just have had a baby or may be dealing with illness or a death in the family, but there are other things that I will learn about a bit more as I explore this new chapter in my life. 🙂

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He’s enjoyed play dates, park days, and library days. He also loved getting to go to Lowe’s with Paul yesterday. They happened to catch the tail-end of the Build and Grow project (a bird feeder). Joseph had a really great time building it and was really excited when Paul put it up in the back yard with some bird seed in it. We noticed this afternoon that the birds are quite happy with it. One funny “Joseph story” that happened this past week occurred when I noticed him playing with some of the “treasures” (some less expensive jewelry, key chains, smashed pennies, etc.) in my “treasure box” (a jewelry box Paul made for me). He proceeded to tell me how much each item cost. I told him he was cute and asked if I could have a hug. He consented, allowed me to pick him up, and then proceeded to tell me that a “Joseph hug” would be $200.00. When I expressed concern about the price, he quickly dropped it to a $1.00. 🙂 Luckily, he wasn’t really expecting payment. 😉

Story time had a few extra participants that night…

Joseph loves these girls. The oldest (as mentioned before) is one of his best buds and he thinks that the baby is pretty darn cute.

After church this afternoon, we drove out to what will be our new building. Surprisingly, it looks just like our current building, which means that the layout will most likely be exactly the same (yay!). Paul says that someone told him the color scheme on the inside is different, so that will be fun. 🙂
IMG_20160410_143237
There’s a large outdoor pavilion, as well as a good sized storage shed (similar to our current building), but there isn’t as large of a field as is at our current building (we were kind of spoiled with that). It does look like it still has a relatively decent grass space, though, and I love all of the mature oak trees.

Loving This Spring Weather!

Weekly Happenings: This past week was relatively uneventful. We did all of the normal things with little exception. We did take advantage of the beautiful weather and went to the park a few times and had a couple of play dates, but other than that, we pretty much just hung around the house. The weekend thus far has been pretty relaxing, what with having the option of watching General Conference while snuggled up on the couch in comfy clothes. 🙂

The Weekly Weather: It’s been a bit cooler than average, and we had a couple different storms come through. I must admit that it’s been nice. It’ll be warm enough once late spring and summer (who am I kidding; toss early fall into that category) come along.

What Paul’s Been Up To: He hasn’t done too much out of the ordinary. He’s got finals coming up for his online courses, so life will be a bit less stressful (for a bit, at least) after this upcoming Wednesday. 🙂

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not too much out of the ordinary for me, either. One of my students had her last lesson this past week (her schedule is getting too busy for piano), but I had another one start, so I’m staying pretty consistent on my enrollment.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He seemed to enjoy the multiple park trips and play dates that we had, as well as when I took him to meet up with friends at a nearby doughnut shop that just opened up. After getting doughnuts, one of my friends offered to have us come over. Her son and Joseph are pretty close in age, so they played together rather well. So well, in fact, that on the way home, Joseph made sure to tell me that if anything were ever to happen to his friend’s house, his friend could come live with us. 🙂 I love that he makes friends so quickly and easily.

“Hey, Mom! Look at me!” He was so proud of himself for getting up there (the ladder for the slide is handy like that) that I couldn’t help but snap his picture.

In between Conference sessions yesterday, Paul used some scrap wood that was in the garage to make a little set of steps for Joseph. I love that he utilizes his talents in making nice things for us!

Joseph drew pictures of himself, holding hands with President Eyring and President Uchdorf (two of the counselors to the prophet and president of our church).

I love the sweet innocence of children that leads them to recognize the kindness of the leaders of our church, helping them to believe that if given the option, our leaders would willingly hold the hands of our little children, leading and guiding them back to our Heavenly Father.
