An {almost} Christmas Miracle

Weekly Happenings: This past week was kind of ho-hum until something amazing happened on Thursday…it snowed! Honest-to-goodness real snow. It wasn’t a whole lot (maybe an inch…at most), but it was enough. 🙂 I had seen the possibility appear on my weather app, but didn’t say anything to Joseph (I didn’t want to get his hopes up). Then, right before putting the kids to bed, I peeked out the window and saw big, fat flakes falling, We hurried up and got bundled up to go play. Joseph kept saying that his birthday wish came true (I had forgotten, but once he said that, I remembered that after he blew out his birthday candle, he told me he wished for it to snow…no specific time…just snow). It was pretty fun. It even stayed well into the next day before melting completely mid-afternoon. In order to preserve the Christmas-y feeling, the next night we went back out to the zoo to see the zoo lights again. It was fun to go when it was cold (the first time, we were practically sweating, which felt kind of silly, haha).

The Weekly Weather: We had the full gamut this past week. Warm weather (it was 82 degrees two days before the day we got snow, haha), rain, snow, and then slightly warming back up. Texas weather is a bit crazy!

What Paul’s Been Up To: He’s been busy finishing up his semester at school (the last day is this next Friday). It will be nice for him to have a short break.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not much, other than my regular stuff.

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He had a good week at school (including a fun reading party put on by the librarian that was for kids who had brought in a certain amount of completed reading logs). He loved playing in the snow (especially getting to have a snowball fight with Paul), and loved getting to go back out to the zoo to see the lights.

What Abigail’s Been Up To: She’s swiftly approaching her first birthday in just a couple of weeks. She is starting to figure out how to wave, has experimented with “whispering” (sometimes she’ll babble at me in a hushed voice if I whisper to her), and is beginning to use things like furniture and boxes to pull herself up onto her knees. She’s also gotten pretty fast at scooting around with her “low crawl” (especially on the wood floor).

This Week in Pictures:

Our picture with Santa from when we were at Bass Pro’s.
Joseph made a sumo wrestler gingerbread man for school (the school plans on putting them up in the hallways). 🙂
A close-up of his gingerbread man.
Got the stockings hung!
I love our tree!
I also love how my piano looks during the holidays.
We opted to get a couple of projectors for the front of the house. It’s a fun look.
This is how Joseph decided to set out his clothes for the next day…
Apparently a cabinet door that is closed in order to protect extra video game stuff (remotes, game cases, etc.) from tiny hands is way more fascinating than tons of age-appropriate toys.
I sure love these two!
His tree makes for a pretty good night light…I do unplug it after he’s asleep, though.
Someone else really loves our tree, too…
There’s so much that’s amusing in this shot: the one sock off…the “I just got caught” look…she’s all over the place!
Cold weather means first shoes for the baby!
Give a busy baby 30 minutes to do as she pleases…
Snow!
Everybody was out in it.
One of our neighbors helped us get a family picture.
We needed documentation!
Family selfie! I was trying to get Abigail to smile, haha.
Making snowballs…
It was coming down at a good rate.
Paul made a mini snowman for Joseph.
It snowed for over an hour…it was crazy!
It was still there in the morning…in fact, it lasted until early afternoon before it was completely melted away.
Realizing that she can pull herself up…
Zoo lights!
Joseph “surfing” on the Komodo dragon.
As well as on the hippos…
Playing a fishing game.
Hanging out with the “Santa dog” at Target.
She really loves interactive toys. This one (which we got from a friend) lights up and plays music if it’s moved or hit.

Why, Hello There, December!

Weekly Happenings: This past week ushered in the month of December. It’s hard to believe that we’re already at this point. In just a few short weeks it will be Abigail’s birthday (what?!) and then Christmas. One fun thing we did was to take the kids to Bass Pro’s Shops to see Santa and to let Joseph play with the fun things they had set up for the kids. I also took both kids to the monthly market day in Old Town Helotes to look around at all the craft booths.

The Weekly Weather: We’ve had cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and then cool evenings. It sort of reminds me of California.

What Paul’s Been Up To: He’s busy with work and school (the semester is going to be wrapping up relatively soon). He also spends a lot of time with Joseph, playing games together (which Joseph absolutely loves). Oh, and he did a bit of maintenance on the neighborhood Christmas decorations (a never-ending task, it seems).

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not too much on my front. Mainly just doing my thing. 🙂

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He’s settled back into the school groove after his week off and also loves having his free time in the afternoons to play with Abigail as well as his toys and games. Have I mentioned that I love, love, love the fact that they aren’t giving them homework?!

What Abigail’s Been Up To: She loves exploring parts of the house now that she’s scooting along at a good pace. She’s also starting to try to get up onto hands and knees for a full-on crawl and has even hinted at trying to pull herself up onto other stuff. This has resulted in turning into a very squirmy baby when I try to hold her on my lap…she wants to go, go, go!

This Week in Pictures:

“Oh, hi Mom! I’m not up to anything…no, not at all!”
One of the things that Joseph loved to play with at Bass Pro’s was this table that had kinetic sand (to look like dirt) with various little shovels, rakes, and mini construction vehicles (dump trucks and the like). He also liked the archery area (suction-cup tipped arrows to aim at wooden ducks).
Whenever we visit Old Town Helotes, he wants me to take his picture on this mini wagon. 🙂

It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas!

Weekly Happenings: We enjoyed a relatively relaxed week this past week. Joseph had the week off, we had a quiet Thanksgiving at home with just our little family, and we tucked away the fall decorations to make way for Christmas stuff. I love this time of year!

The Weekly Weather: It’s been warm-ish…mid- to upper-70s with a couple days in the low 80s.

What Paul’s Been Up To: He’s been really busy with school work (and his day job, of course). He also pounded out a lot of Christmas trees made out of wood pallets to use as decorations for the entrances to the neighborhood and he (with the help of some others in the neighborhood) spent yesterday morning decorating each entrance.

What Sarah’s Been Up To: Not too much out of the ordinary for me. While Paul tackled the outside house decorations, Joseph and I tackled the inside. So much fun!

What Joseph’s Been Up To: He enjoyed his week off (5:30 tomorrow morning might be a shock). He’s been excited about getting Christmas stuff out, so Friday was a lot of fun for him.

What Abigail’s Been Up To: Ever since the Christmas tree went up, her crawling efforts have increased, ten-fold, haha. She is a super-busy baby and also likes to play peek-a-boo with me by putting the burp cloth over my face and then pulling it off. She also has figured out that feeding herself is rather fun and loves to sit with us at dinner, shoveling puff snacks into her mouth as fast as is safely possible, haha. She hit her 11 month mark mid-week last week, which just blows my mind. I can’t believe she’s so big!

This Week in Pictures:

“Stuck” under Joseph’s desk, but not really minding a bit.
These two absolutely love hanging out together.
Attacking the stuffed animal bin.
So hard to believe!
Caught in the act of beginning to spread toys all around. She’s such a busy baby!
Our yummy Thanksgiving feast. Paul was in charge of the turkey (he smoked it on the grill) while I attacked the sides.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Sleepy baby!
Our “baby-resistant” (because is it ever really baby-proof?) solution for the tree (which started when Joseph was a baby).
Paul’s version of Black Friday shopping: gifts for me and the kids that were actually delivered on Friday.
Since we couldn’t find a stocking for Abigail that matched our old ones, we opted to replace everyone’s stockings. Joseph helped me come up with the ideas of what picture to draw on each stocking (after he saw the tree I drew on his). He wanted a Christmas item that matched the color of each stocking, so Paul’s has a snowman, mine has candy canes, his has a Christmas tree, and Abigail’s has ornaments.
Like I mentioned before, the presence of the tree has greatly encouraged her to start crawling even more.
The beginning of the pallet Christmas trees (after he cut the pallets into triangles and attached trunk made from 2x4s).
All painted…
Lights attached, bows on top, and spotlighted. The neat thing about this picture is that since there isn’t any electricity at this particular entrance (the other entrances have signs with spotlights, so they have electricity), Paul got the idea to find spotlights and Christmas lights that could be attached to solar panels. Wahoo!
Someone decided to come and say hello to me as I had my breakfast.
